Nacho Abia, President & CEOAs a powerhouse of emerging technologies for diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopes, sterile single-use devices and ENT implants, Olympus America equips healthcare professionals with advanced, minimally invasive technologies to enhance the quality of patient care around the globe. For over five decades now, Olympus has been instrumental in providing a wide range of endoscopes and medical imaging devices for gastroenterology, urology, neurosurgery, and gynecology. With Olympus’ state of the art products, physicians can peek inside the human body, fight cancers with minimally invasive procedures, and diagnose and treat a broad range of illnesses. As a precision technology leader in the medical industry, Olympus is committed to bringing products to the market to help people have healthier and safer lives.
Taking Endoscopy to a New Level
Olympus’ leadership in innovative technology translates into its innovative gastrointestinal endoscopy products that include a range of endoscopes, devices, and accessories to meet every GI procedural need. Representing the latest evolution in advanced patient care, Olympus’s EVIS EXERA III video endoscopy platform empowers physicians to view the interiors of the body more clearly and diagnose the disease at its earliest stage. The EVIS EXERA III endoscopy system provides high-level visualization, control, and workflow to facilitate accurate diagnostics and treatment, simplify setup and reprocessing. Further, the system allows physicians to easily link patient and department information to the hospital’s information network using smart technologies with advanced levels of sophistication and integration. With a narrow band imaging technology, Olympus has enhanced the observation of mucosal tissue with a much brighter and clear view. Offering a superior quality of the image, the platform fosters detailed observation and analysis. Similarly, the EVIS EXERA III endoscopy system provides the ability of a dual focus to examine the tissue closely as required.
Unlike other systems that save numerous images into internal memory, Olympus’ system captures only the most accurate and crisp image owing to its still image capture algorithm. The EVIS EXERA III endoscopy system gives a high level of control to the hands of physicians with its responsive insertion technology (RIT). This technology not only improves ease of insertion but also minimizes patient discomfort while enhancing procedural efficiency. With a soft, passive bending section, the endoscope can softly take acute turns. In addition, the platform supports high-level 3D laparoscopic visualization, HD intra-operative gastric endoscopy and advanced energy solutions for performing minimally invasive bariatric surgeries.
What’s more, the EVIS EXERA III platform is compatible with several other specialties such as surgical endoscopy, urology, and ENT. In the field of pulmonology, EVIS EXERA III offers bronchoscopes that are specially designed to enhance tracheobronchial access while delivering visibility that is second to none.

Over and Above Endoscopes and Cameras
To support capsule endoscopy for visualizing the small intestine, Olympus has uniquely designed a feature-rich and highly intuitive ENDOCAPSULE EC-10 System that incorporates the company’s advanced imaging technology, practice efficiency, and continuous software innovation. With ENDOCAPSULE EC-10, physicians can view 10 percent more mucosa as compared to other capsule endoscopy platforms with a 160-degree wide angle. The platform’s 3D track feature enables clients to view the map of the capsule’s anatomical location within the small bowel that correlates to clinical images. This provides actionable information to physicians for subsequent treatment through deep enteroscopy or surgery. Physicians can get incredibly clear and vivid images thanks to the Olympus lens and sensitive high-resolution image sense technology. Further, the platform allows physicians to easily manage the capsule practice and time efficiently through its intelligent reading modes. Interestingly, ENDOCAPSULE EC-10 superimposes identical images and images full of bubbles and debris while optimizing the speed to quickly move past recorded images to greatly reduce playback times, increasing reading efficiency and effectiveness.
To simplify endoscope reprocessing record and image management, the company has developed Olympus Knowledge Exchange System (KE) that facilitates centralized reprocessing through extended connectivity from Olympus devices. Physicians can use the KE communication and reprocessing management modules are together to ensure seamless flow of patient and procedure data between the procedure and reprocessing room.
The KE system ensures a streamlined data entry from EMR systems in the procedure room that saves time and reduces error-prone data entries. On the other hand, the KE reprocessing management module merges patient, procedural and reprocessing records allowing clients to comply with regulatory standards.
OSTA—The Driving Engine
The groundbreaking technologies that Olympus offers are a result of its R&D wing, Olympus Surgical Technologies America (OSTA), where a slew of innovative technologies and solutions powering the next phase of medical devices are built every day. OSTA is responsible for the development of devices for many surgical specialties including urology, gynecology, ENT, and general surgery. OSTA is driven by its close connections with the international research community, leading physicians and scientists that aid in the development of innovative instruments. With this strong partnership, OSTA has given a new dimension to surgical devices that meet the needs of medical professionals and patients globally.
"We want Olympus to be recognized for all of the good that it puts back into the world and for making people’s lives healthier, safer and more fulfilling every day"
Olympus has come a long way from its inception, and much of the credit goes to its CEO and President, Nacho Abia, who has been steering the company for the past two decades. He firmly believes in the motto, “Be persistent. Never give up and fight for what you believe is right.” Under his leadership, the company is sprinting ahead with aggressive plans to grow in the medical business. Continuing on its quest of delivering next-generation technologies for surgical procedures, Olympus has recently partnered with InterSystems, a provider of high-performance software systems. The company is enhancing the capabilities of its KE by implementing InterSystems’ HealthShare, a healthcare informatics platform. By combining the capabilities of HealthShare with KE, Olympus allows physicians to seamlessly connect to a hospital’s EMR system to store and share imaging files. The integrated solution will simplify data sharing while enhancing the quality of patient care. Additionally, clients will benefit from reduced patient privacy concerns with the combined offering as the healthcare facility does not physically transport the information. “We want Olympus to be recognized for all of the good that it puts back into the world and for making people’s lives healthier, safer and more fulfilling every day,” concludes Abia.
