A paradigm shift is taking hold in bedside diagnosis. Once limited to hospital radiology departments, ultrasonography is now more accessible to patients through portable, non-invasive point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) devices. These devices create high-resolution, realtime images that can be interpreted quickly on caregivers’ smartphones and tablets to expedite patient diagnosis and treatment.

While POCUS holds the power to transform bedside diagnosis, caregivers need proper training to confidently and safely use this novel technology.

Global Ultrasound Institute (GUSI), a technologydriven education and training company, fulfills this critical need by empowering medical providers of all experience levels and specialties with comprehensive POCUS skills.

From self-paced, highly individualized online courses, virtual mentorship, scan review feedback, and immersive in-person courses, GUSI provides wraparound evidence-based training for clinicians who want to become confident and competent with POCUS. Providing expert real-time and virtual guidance on image acquisition, scan interpretation, and clinical decision-making, GUSI helps clinicians incorporate POCUS into their practice of medicine.

A new GUSI Scan Review service enables clinicians to receive expert feedback and quality assurance on their POCUS scans, wherever and whenever needed. The feedback enhances the clinician’s ability to acquire images, correctly interpret them, and safely incorporate POCUS into patient care.

GUSI will also soon be releasing its groundbreaking smartphone app, which significantly streamlines the process of uploading ultrasound scans from any ultrasound device safely and securely onto the company’s Scan Portfolio platform. This innovation will reduce barriers to obtaining feedback on educational scans and facilitate scan sharing and archiving.

Leveraging AI and machine learning represents a pivotal leap for GUSI. Integration of AI modules into the educational framework enhances the learning and teaching experience and enables learners and POCUS champions to optimize the learning experience to achieve the best results in the shortest amount of time.

“Our goal has always been to improve patient care by offering healthcare providers the necessary training, support, and software to foster competency in effectively utilizing POCUS. That’s what guides us,” says Dr. Kevin Bergman, CEO and co-founder of Global Ultrasound Institute.

GUSI understands that having immediate access to the right tools is key to effective care delivery. Unfortunately, half the world still does not have ready access to diagnostic imaging, especially in rural regions.

By raising the skills of medical providers, the team strives to bridge that gap, expediting the adoption of this revolutionary technology and bringing its transformative power to patients worldwide. Whether in a primary care office, a homeless encampment, or a critical access facility in a rural area, GUSItrained healthcare providers have the expertise to gather critical insights and make well-informed decisions right at the patient’s bedside while saving them healthcare dollars.

Our goal has always been to improve patient care by offering healthcare providers the necessary training, support, and software to foster competency in effectively utilizing POCUS. That’s what guides us

The impact of GUSI is best illustrated by its leadership in the largest POCUS training project in history. The company conducted extensive training of more than 500 rural nurse midwives in Kenya, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in partnership with Kenyatta University and Butterfly Network. A training initiative of this scale has led to unprecedented results; over 100,000 ultrasound scans done so far have been conducted for pregnant women, 76 percent of whom had not had an ultrasound performed in prior pregnancies. The achievement demonstrates the company’s steadfast determination to break barriers to POCUS adoption through education and training.

This excellence is built on the largest network of POCUS educators worldwide, with over 350 experts across 15 countries. Its extensive reach now spans 60 countries, with more than 10,000 users benefiting from its resources and techniques.

With the focus on expanding its content offerings, GUSI offers POCUS courses in Primary and Acute Care, Pediatrics, Musculoskeletal, Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN), and Critical Care. With a detailed curriculum and a clinically relevant focus, each course has embedded quizzes for knowledge assessments.

By democratizing access to diagnostic imaging for providers and patients, GUSI benefits the healthcare system as a whole. Sitting at the nexus of technology and medical acumen, it reshapes healthcare paradigms, envisioning a future where advanced healthcare is accessible to all, regardless of location and circumstances.

GUSI is steadfast in its mission to scale the adoption of POCUS, elevate patient care, and close the healthcare equity gap in underserved communities. With a soon-to-be-launched smartphone application, incorporation of modern technologies, and a robust online platform, it aspires to create a transformative impact with the power of this life-changing technology in every corner of the globe.
