The Role of Technology and Prevention in Modern Dentistry

Healthcare Business Review

Gisella Norlander, General Dentist at Folktandvården Stockholm AB
Tweet

Gisella’s Career Milestones

The principal key in my career is passion that I have to help people and constantly improve my knowledge. Helping people in need of care in Peru with simple treatments gave a lot of experience. Understanding that great need that exists in humanity when it comes to dental care gave me meaning in my profession. I thought that way when I worked in the Military Hospital in Peru and a simple tooth status could be so important in case of need for recognition of a body, or the importance of dental health in case of war. And working in rural places with my own dental equipment and my colleagues was important experience for us.

I have worked at Folktandvården Stockholm since 2005 with children, young adults and older adults helping their dental health. Every treatment we offer with high quality has led me to execute more complicated treatments like dentoalveorar surgery  and implant surgery.

Impact of Technological Advancements on Complex Surgeries

I am fortunate to have experienced technological development in dentistry. I appreciate the difference of working with more precision. Dental microscopes transform the way to perform complex procedures because of the possibility to locating hidden canals that have been obstructed by calcification and reduced in size, removing materials such as filling material, preparing for access to avoid unnecessary destruction of tissue or repairing perforations. Microscopes offer numerous advantages and increase efficiency. The microscope provides 400 times more visual accuracy than the naked eye and 100 times the visual information than traditional dental loupes. Magnification improves accuracy of tooth treatments and enhance visibility in diagnosing, prepping, seating and finishing.

Before undergoing dental implant surgery, thorough preparation is essential to ensure a smooth and successful procedure with detailed pre-operative instructions. This may include guidelines that helps minimize the risk of complications and ensure optimal conditions for the surgery.

We order a CBCT scan, is a 3D imaging technology that provides detailed views of the teeth and surrounding structures. This dental CBCT is specially designed to produce high quality images of the teeth, jaws and face by capturing tomographic images from different angles. It helps with more accurate diagnosis and treatment planning for dental implants.

We use an intraoral scanner when we prepare scanning implants. For do that we start Scanning the scan body. A scan body is a marker that allows CAD software to identify the location and insertion direction, or angle of an implant fixture in the mouth.

The Role of Preventions in Maintaining Lifelong Oral Health

Oral health plays and important role in overall health. Establishing good dental habits, like brushing and flossing keeps excess bacteria under control and prevents infections in the mouth and other parts of the body.

Pediatric dentist and general dentist at folktandvården Stockholm teach parents and kids the importance of creating good habits to last a lifetime. We will have the proper screening and treatment to prevent future dental problems.

We recommend taken your child to the dentist after they first tooth appears and get information for maintain lifelong oral health. Our best advice  is drink water when they are thirsty and avoid soda as well as sweets. Some children eating candy once a week. And show parents to brush their children´s teeth.

Contribution of Digital Dentistry to Enhancing Patient Outcomes

One of the most significant changes the last 25 years of my career is the introduction of digital dentistry. Digital x-rays show the image immediately on a computer, scanning teeth and gums converted into three-dimensional models on a computer, CBCT, and others several digital methods have been incorporated to dental practice to replace conventional methods and techniques in order to enhance treatment, planning and execution.

It´s possible to present the final result to our patient and adjust the plan based on their wishes regarding the esthetics and treatment timeline. We offer a dental treatment with digital precision and accuracy.

Digital solutions allow dentists to take impressions quicker and avoid all the difficulties that physical impression may cause like gag-reflex or teeth hypersensitivity to cold agents.

Digital dental technologies speed up processes for the labs and dentists which lets us help more patients.

Future Innovations in Dentistry

Guided implant surgery add accuracy. This process blends acquired images to existing dentition to create implant specific precise guides. Using CBCT/ cone-beam computed tomography, 3D printed surgical guides, virtual implant surgery planning is so exciting.

Guided implant surgery has many advantages including; better aesthetics results, enhance long-term stability of the peri-implant soft and hard tissue due to simpler oral hygiene methods, better occlusal relationships, possibility of creating screwed and non-cemented prosthetics structures.

These factors contribute to the better long-term success of implant prosthetic therapies. Guided implant surgery helps us with any anatomical and surgical limitations. The exact volume and quality of the bone can be assessed early in the diagnostic phase through CBCT, CT.

And my dream is to have the possibility to work with Dynamic Guided Surgery, refers to the use of an implant navigation system that produces the virtual position of the implant in real time within the computed tomographic data and allows inter-operator changes in position. All these systems are based on the real-time detection of the three-dimensional position of the implant handpiece and on the position of the implant preparation drills of the implant. There is always pros and cons, and this dynamical system is too expensive and complex. Maybe someday!

 Advice to Aspiring Dental Professionals

The placement of osseointegrated dental implants has become a common and routine procedure in clinical dental practice. Implant therapy must be oriented towards the prosthetic rehabilitation of the patient with the goal of functional and aesthetic restauration. But don´t forget that the best treatment is to save patient´s own teeth.

Enjoy your career, enjoy every day at work and give the best of you in each case, in each patient. And constantly update your knowledge.
